Inlet Park Re-Development Project
‘Kick off’ to a New Turf Field at Inlet Park
When a soccer field dubs as an overflow parking lot, you know something has to change! Two years ago, the Port Moody Soccer Club pulled together a sub-committee called ‘RIFT’ (Redevelopment of Inlet Field Taskforce), and has been working since then to engage our soccer family, other associations (i.e. field lacrosse, baseball, etc.) and members of Port Moody City Council to push this project forward. There have also been many meetings with City staff and other community stakeholders to discuss development options.
Port Moody City Council decided on a phased redevelopment plan in 2012, starting with a single field and baseball diamond on a north-south alignment that would minimize encroachment into the surrounding park and forest at a cost of about $2.7 million. Future additions could include a second soccer field, clubhouse, batting cage and extra parking, which would add another $3 million. In 2016 Council approved allocating $375,000 for a new Inlet Park Field Redevelopment Capital Reserve, coming from federal gas tax funds and the 2015 operating budget surplus, so that a plan could be developed, and requested that the City and PMSC work together on corporate sponsorship and donation opportunities. The Tri-City News featured an article on Inlet and the allocation of these funds – click here to read the article.
To date, a revised plan is in the final stages with the City – which features three side by side Super 8 turf fields with goals situated at the north and south ends of the fields, and a mid-sized baseball diamond in each of the two kitty-corners. The plan also allows for a new multi-function Clubhouse and safer vehicle access to the park. An improved batting cage is also a consideration. Once the ‘shovel ready’ plan has been approved, the next step will be to look for funding for this estimated $6 million project.
We need your help! We need to keep the dialogue going with the City in respect to the community need for a new field – please let our Councillors know of your support. If you have contacts or ideas on sponsorship or other funding opportunities, let the PMSC Executive know.
