Port Moody U16 01 AC Selects won the Provincial A Cup ... for the 3rd year in a row!!!

On July 6-9 our U16 AC boys, coached by Johnny Sulentic, won Gold at the Provincial A Cup in Surrey. Port Moody faced Coastal Cup champions West Van Rangers, Vancouver Island champions Bays United/Peninsula, and BC Interior champions Kamloops Blaze in round-robin play.

The Port Moody team were beaten in their first game against a strong West Van team by a score of 4-2. In game two the Port Moody AC team regrouped and managed a 4-2 win against a physical and fast Bays United/Peninsula team. In the third game, they really started to play the beautiful AC style and managed a 6-0 win over the Kamloops Blaze.

The 2 wins in round-robin play meant they would have a chance for redemption against their MSL rivals from West Van in Sunday's Championship Game. Coach Johnny Sulentic adjusted tactics for the final and it payed off. Port Moody dominated play and managed 3 goals in the first 15 minutes to take decisive control of the game. Team captain, Steven Ono, started the scoring in the 7th minute, finishing with a one-time shot from close range after a nice combination of passes. Tye Engmann scored 2 more in the 14th and 15th minutes to add to the lead. Throughout the first half, the Port Moody team passed well and combined to create multiple scoring chances. They also defended brilliantly as a team, winning the vast majority of free balls and giving the West Van players no time on the ball and no space to move. This strong play continued in the second half and Lucas Ciulla added a 4th Port Moody goal in the 60th minute to seal the deal. West Van scored a consolation goal in the final minute and the score ended 4-1.

Ethan Gaddu and Tye Engmann led the way with 3 goals apiece in the tournament while 9 other Port Moody players found the back of the net once.

Congratulations boys and coaching staff for another fine season and for once again bringing the Provincial Cup back to Port Moody!
